This review is from: Sony VAIO SVT1311W1ES.CEK 13.3-inch Laptop (Silver) - (Intel Core i5 1.70GHz Processor, 4GB RAM, 128GB SSD, Windows 7 Edition Home Premium) (Personal Computers) I really like this laptop, mainly because it is fast. This (and other good things about it) is obvious from the product description so I thought I'd mention why it's 4 stars and not 5:- the fan is on all the time so it's a bit noisy (on other models only comes on when it needs to, for example it's doing some heavy processing) - it is not all metal as I thought when I ordered it; the bottom half is platic 4 of 5 people found the following review helpful Cutting Edge and Obsolete?, By This review is from: Sony VAIO SVT1311W1ES.CEK 13.3-inch Laptop (Silver) - (Intel Core i5 1.70GHz Processor, 4GB RAM, 128GB SSD, Windows 7 Edition Home Premium) (Personal Computers) Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Programme (What's this?) The laptop market has changed hugely over the last few years. The casual users; 90% used for internet browsing & email, have been lured over to using Tablet computers. I have an Acer Iconia A500 which I mostly use. Is the Laptop dead technology? Let's see.The catchily named SVT1311W1ES.CEK is one of a new line-up of compact high-powered & powerful laptops trying to beat-off an assault from the Tablet army. Designed to beat tablets with power & speed in a slick format. The item arrived in Amazons now typical "frustration-free" packaging and itself is well insulated inside its own box. In the Sony box you get the Laptop, manuals and charger. Nothing else; no case, USB cables or whatever. Seems a bit stingey at this price. First Impression was that it appears to be well made with a reasonable weight but not particularly heavy. You'd have no problems carry this around in your bag all day but you wouldn't want to carry it in your hands whilst using it for extended periods. It's fairly compact for a 14" model but there are a LOT slimmer out there. The Asus Ultrabooks appear to be much sleeker at a similar price (a bit smaller though) The outer is mostly plastic with a metal keyboard face and screen backing. Don't; let the silver-effect fool you, it's mostly plastic. The screen is plastic, not glass like the latest high spec model or tablets. The look & feel of the keyboard is really quite nice. No a tactile as a "proper" keyboard, but really nice for a slimline unit like this. It is a standard Uk layout, no numeric keys but all the functions are there. The Pg Up & Pg Dn keys have to accessed using the Fn key which is a bit annoying. At first glance there aren't any mouse button on the touchpad but the lower corners of the pad click to give you the left & right clicks. Additionally, the right edge of the touchpad can be used to scroll web pages; an essential requirement not always present. The supplied charger is rather compact which is very nice to see. You'd have no problems carrying that around with you. The lead is around 2m long, plus 0.5m or so for the figure-8 lead. Sony have done a good job here. The power connector is a simple round pin which isn't a particularly good fit. When charging, the right-angled connector sticks out of the left side of the unit just asking to be knocked & damaged. Why can't they use magnetic connectors? Other connectors; right side you have a headphone socket, SD/MS slot, HDMI, VGA & LAN. Left side you have power and 2x USB (1 powered). Note there's no DVD drive! Right then, powering up takes a rapid 15s or so. However, the laptop has a great function; you just close the lid & it goes into a low power state. When you reopen the lid, it starts up again is just a second or so. Brilliant! In use, this thing is FAST. I mean really quick. The i5 QUAD core processor is a monster and the solid-state drive adds to the speed. Apps & web pages open in a second. I think the only let-down is the poor graphics card which really reduces the score. Still, this thing is quicker than my Quad-core desktop PC which I use for Photoshop. The mouse is perfectly easy to use, it even has a pinch-to-zoom function. However, my wife didn't like it as it tended to get "stuck" on buttons. Not sure what the issue was there. I can't comment on battery life too much. It appears to last 4-5 hours but I've not been able to condition it yet. I think I'd easily get a few days out of a single charge. The screen is bright & sharp. Not as good as the screen on my Acer Iconia as the viewing angle isn't as good. I think I expected a little better for this price. The laptop comes with Windows 7 pre-installed (no CD supplied). I've been using W7 for a few years on my desktop & I love it. However, in the past 3 years, the Tablet PC has decimated the PC market. iOS, Android & now, W8 are the basic expectation. Therefore, I found the "old" W7 interface to feel obsolete..... and it is. My biggest problem with the Vaio is the level of customisation bundled with it. You get McAfee preinstalled, which I hate. A lot of Sony toolbars & menu which are poorly implemented, look aweful & almost freeze your computer. I spent some hours deleting all this junk! Having a small 128Gb HDD may become a problem for some people but a lot of laptop users tend to external HDDs and flash memory, so this is less of a problem. The advantage of this Solid-State Drive (SSD) is increased speed. And it shows! Finally, the price. This Vaio retails at around |
