2.0 out of 5 stars Excellent fingerprint magnet; several hardware issues, 26 Nov 2012

A relative purchased this via Amazon's Black Friday deals and it arrived today, with its battery fully charged which is extremely unusual and somewhat suspicious in that it may have been previously sold and returned. There is some other evidence to suggest that as a possibility. She has sufficient knowledge and experience to wirelessly connect a laptop to her router but it repeatedly failed. I was then asked to assist.

No matter how many attempts were made, it would simply not connect but reports an unknown error with its wireless card. I double-checked the router settings to ensure that she had chosen correctly, and she had, and also attempted to connect to my own router, the settings for which are solidly engrained in memory. It failed to connect to either although I was selectively able to connect another laptop to both alternately and whenever wished at almost the same time in addition to the pre-existing wired connections. I also ensured that all available relevant Windows 8 updates were installed but none were specifically Wi-Fi-related, just the usual security ones.

The connection procedure was attempted more than 15 times, mostly to her router but infrequently to my own. It failed every time. In despair, I resorted to its Recovery solution to return it to its 'as delivered' state. After completion, and during its initial set-up stages, it again failed to connect via Wi-Fi to her router. I made one last attempt to connect again after the set-up process had completed and this time, to my surprise, it actually connected. I had not changed anything and the router is about 25-30cm from the nearest edge of the laptop and I cannot therefore understand the cause of the problem. Connection to either router has never been an issue.

The body colour is supposed to be dark bronze but appears black in all light, daylight and artificial, and is of the type that attracts fingerprints and marks alarmingly quickly. Quite what is meant by Lenovo's description of it having a "Metal C" cover is not clear but it is very obviously plastic, as is the body. You may need to spend time cleaning the keyboard surround and top rather frequently if it is to look pristine. The screen is highly reflective but the colour and contrast appear quite good.

Another minor issue is that there is a logo on the F6 key that resembles a windscreen wiper but it does not appear to produce an on-screen icon indicating its purpose when the respective keys are pressed, and there is nothing in any of the provided documentation to explain any of the various Fn functions, the remainder of which are quite logical and work as expected.

A more serious issue concerns the touchpad, which is more a patterned area than a separate module built into the wrist rest. Its performance is erratic and plainly crazy and the cursor moves even though you are not in actual contact with the pad but close to it. That is bad enough but if you move your finger to the right, the cursor sometimes moves to the left and if moved down it can move upwards. I have used far many more laptops than has she and I don't think that I have ever previously seen this behaviour. This is not the first Lenovo laptop she has owned and it was because of her experience with a previous model that she chose this, primarily as a more portable alternative to her heavier high-end desktop replacement.

A further issue with the touch-pad is with its gesture support, or specifically the relative lack of it. I was unable to ascertain that it supported more than the usual scrolls plus the pinch-zoom. It appears that this is a 'feature' common to many of the current Win8-equipped models. It may be that the touch-pad manufacturers do not have the necessary hardware or the fully functioning software to support all available gestures.

It supposedly includes a face recognition system, which it does not as there was no trace of the supporting software. There is no clear indication on the computer as to when Caps Lock, Num Lock, Shift or other such keys is engaged or disengaged which is a minor inconvenience, but the various more serious issues are such that it is to be returned. She was anxious to engage with Windows 8 but will probably be looking for a different solution, probably not from Lenovo.

I am rather surprised that a brand new laptop should present with what may be hardware-related issues out-of-the-box. The whole experience is a disappointment and a waste of several hours of our collective time. There is no logical explanation for the reluctance of the Wi-Fi card to connect or the non-functional Fn key. The touch pad is clearly unusable in the state experienced and I hope that it is due to a faulty unit in this instance. If a general issue, the model is unusable.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Product, 20 Dec 2012

In my opinion, it is an affordable product given the fact it has Windows 8 and has Intel Core i3 also compared to from other company with the same specifications. The only bad thing about it is the touch pad which is really frustrating most of the times. Otherwise the overall product is great and i like the new app system. It runs smoothly with very very rare screen freeze. Sound Quality is good, the LCD is good, not much heavy or light weight, great camera but the microphone is awe full.
